Sarasota County commissioners moved a step closer Wednesday to approving a controversial ordinance establishing an energy economic zone program.

Approved by the state in 2009, the program is designed to attract businesses that produce clean technology services or products, like solar panels, as well as businesses that are housed in “green” or energy-efficient buildings, through the issuance of financial incentives.
