Mayer one step closer to Olympics
Since winning the 2011 Women’s National Golden Gloves title last July in Charlotte County, 21-year-old Mikaela Mayer has set her sights on becoming an Olympian. She took one step closer to her goal after edging a 26-25 decision over 2011 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist N’yteeyah Sherman late Friday night at the U.S. Olympic women’s boxing trials in Spokane, Wash.
With the victory, Mayer (132) earned a rematch with Queen Underwood in Saturday night’s finals. If Mayer wins, she will have to face Underwood again today in the double-elimination competition. Underwood beat Mayer by a 27-20 decision earlier in the week. If Mayer loses, she will have to wait until 2016 for another chance at Olympic stardom.
