Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Deep Creek man for trying to pass a $9,659 tax refund check with a fake driver’s license at an Englewood business. This is the same man who was shot and dropped off at a hospital in Port Charlotte Feb. 4; he refused to tell detectives how or where the shooting occurred. CCSO received a call from a clerk at The Check Cashing Store, 1720 S. McCall Road, at 6:15 p.m. Sunday evening and was stalling the subject until deputies arrived. Upon arrival, deputies asked the man what his name was and he said, “I don’t know.” However, another deputy arrived and instantly recognized the subject as Terrance Lamont Lewis, 22, 300 block of Maranon Way, from the Feb. 4 shooting incident.

Lewis attempted to cash the refund check with a fake driver’s license in another person’s name; he filled out all the paperwork to cash the check but the clerk became suspicious of the license given. Deputies asked Lewis if he had anything illegal on him and he advised he did not. A pat down located a .380 caliber pistol in his rear pocket with the serial numbers removed and six rounds of ammunition in the weapon. During the pat down, deputies found the previous wounds to his left hip area. Lewis was transported to the Charlotte County Jail, where he remains on bond due to being a previously convicted felon. He was charged with uttering a forged instrument, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a forged or fictitious driver’s license, possession of a firearm with altered or removed serial number, and probation violation.
