Police: Man stabbed; woman threatened at home
NORTH PORT — A home in the 7500 block of Hanchey St. was the scene of two alleged crimes in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to two separate North Port police reports, eight people were in the house. Four of them were drinking and possibly under the influences of other substances, a report states. Around 12:30 a.m., an argument took place when the homeowner noticed he was missing about $130. A man who rents the home’s garage allegedly told everyone they would be searched for the money. James Roody St. Fort, 24, of the 6800 block of S. Biscayne Drive, submitted to the search, but then got into a fight with the man who suggested everyone be searched. According to the report, the man got a knife to defend himself and St. Fort got a pair of scissors from the kitchen. The victim, a 44-year-old man, got between the two men to try and stop the fight. St. Fort rushed toward the other man but knocked the victim down, then jumped on top of him and stabbed him with the scissors, the report states. The victim was taken to a local ER and treated for his injuries. St. Fort was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He remained at the Sarasota County Jail Wednesday on $10,000 bond.
Shortly after the above incident, police again responded to the Hanchey Street home following a dropped 911 call from the address. According to a report, a 20-year-old woman who lives at the house told officers Andrew Gerald Smith, 39, of the 6300 block of Kenwood Drive, had threatened to stab her with a knife. The report states that, during the fight, the victim and Smith were standing in the hallway, and that he pulled a switchblade-style knife out of his pocket from his pants pocket, opened it and held it about 6 inches from her face. She said Smith told her, “We’re going to end this now,” according to the report. The victim said she feared for her life and backed away from Smith, managing to slip past him. When police searched Smith, they found two whole pills and two partial pills that were later determined to be Zolpidem tartrate, a controlled substance. Smith didn’t have a prescription for the pills. According to the report, he told officers that he got them from the stabbing victim. Smith was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He also remained in jail on $7,000 bond.
