Detectives investigating weekend slashing, shooting

PORT CHARLOTTE — Charlotte County sheriff’s detectives are continuing to investigate a slashing and a shooting early Saturday morning in Port Charlotte. According to the CCSO, deputies responded to Peace River Regional Medical Center to investigate a stabbing incident that occurred in the parking lot at Boomers, 2460 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte, around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Leon A. Mercurius, 23, 17900 block of Murdock Circle, was slashed with a straight razor in a possible retaliation for a stabbing incident Dec. 24 at the Caribbean-Oriental Grocery, 2745 Tamiami Trail. Mercurius was treated at the emergency room and released. He was charged in that Christmas Eve stabbing of a 42-year-old North Port man.

CCSO received another call at 2:11 a.m. Saturday concerning shots fired in the parking lot of Emerald City, 1225 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. It was reported a man in the parking fired shots toward a dark-colored vehicle. At 2:14 a.m., CCSO received a call from Fawcett Memorial Hospital concerning a man who drove himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies responded and located a dark green Mercedes in the ambulance parking lot with a bullet hole in a rear window. The 29-year-old Port Charlotte victim was treated and released.
