Marty Haggard pays musical
tribute to father at Turner Center
ARCADIA — Great music resonated throughout the Turner Center last Thursday as Marty Haggard’s show “Tribute to Merle Haggard: My Dad” was performed for an estimated 300 attendees. Haggard took the stage following two warm-up acts and presented a simple set with just himself and a childhood friend, both playing acoustic/electric guitars.
He opened his show with “The Last Thing on My Mind,” a 1960s Tom Paxton tune, and closed out some 90 minutes later with gospel singer Squire Parson’s popular hit “Beaulah Land.” In between he wowed concert-goers with a large selection of his legendary father’s songs, including “Silver Wings,” “Okie From Muskogee” and “Mama Tried.” The audience was delighted that he shared a number of stories behind some of the songs, as well as anecdotes about his raising.
